I have heard a lot of people knocking alliteration lately. I have read two or three articles knocking the writing device and some individuals posting about it.

I am a huge fan of juxtaposition. In college I often claimed that I sometimes just said things just to hear how they would sound together. The same is true today. If I am in a meeting or with friends and I hear a string of words that sound good together, it makes me happy. I often say that I will save those words for a future band name or trivia team name.

The other day, [info]squidmonde brought up the idea of "object oriented comedy." Though I don't know what that would be like, I just the pictures it brings up in my head.

So alliteration to me is just another form of juxtaposition. Putting words together in a way that feel good.

Now, I will admit that I have used alliteration as a crutch before... "I don't like what I am writing so I will throw in some alliteration to gussy it up," but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Just because it is sometimes misused does not mean that as a device it is flawed. Cars, wine and plaids are sometimes misused as well, but I don't think we should get rid of them.

I pulled this from the Galloway Web site. I wanted to spread the news to those out of town.

The Galloway School reports with great sadness the death of its founder, Elliott Galloway. On Saturday, July 5, Mr. Galloway, 87 years old, died peacefully at Piedmont Hospital. An avid runner, he had participated in his thirty-eighth consecutive Peachtree Road Race the previous day. True to form, he wore his running shoes to the hospital.

The school will host a reception on Thursday, July 10, at 2:00 pm in the Chaddick Arts Center of The Galloway School for his family, friends, colleagues and members of the school community.

Here is an article from the local Fox station.
